Scent Work For Engagement Off Lead

Scent Work for Engagement Off Lead

In the summer, when I let Bear have some freedom off lead, I’m always on high alert for picnics — he’s become quite the picnic connoisseur! 🧺 That’s why I love mixing in a few scent games during our walks. They keep him focused on me, engaged in a fun task, and far less interested in other distractions.

🐾 Why Scent Work Builds Better Engagement

Scent work taps into your dog’s natural instincts. It gives them a “job” to do and channels energy into something positive. Instead of chasing smells across the park or raiding someone’s picnic, your dog learns that you provide the best sniffing opportunities.

Each time you hide a toy or treat and say “find it,” you’re reinforcing focus, problem-solving, and impulse control — all skills that translate into better recall and calmer off-lead behaviour.

🎯 How to Play

On your next walk, bring along a favourite Tug-E-Nuff toy or something with your dog’s scent on it. When they’re not looking, toss it into long grass or a bush and say “find it!” Use encouraging tones, let them sniff it out, and celebrate when they succeed. 🎉

Allow them to parade the toy proudly before asking for a drop cue. Repeat a few times throughout the walk — it keeps their mind busy, boosts your bond, and builds stronger focus even in distracting environments.

🧠 Mental Stimulation = A Happier Dog

Scent work is brilliant for burning off mental energy. After a few rounds of “find it,” most dogs are happily tired — not from running miles, but from using their nose and brain. It’s a calmer kind of fatigue that helps reduce reactivity and improves focus on future walks.
