If you are a parent, grandparent, or carer with a dog in the home, this video is essential viewing. Most issues between dogs and children are preventable, but only when we teach children how to interact with dogs safely and respectfully.
This post was inspired by a comment about a 12 week old puppy growling when a child cuddled it, with all the blame placed on the puppy. Growling is not naughty behaviour. It is communication. It is a dog saying they are uncomfortable and need space.
If adults miss that warning, the next step can be a bite. Not because the dog is bad, but because they have run out of ways to ask.
Simple Child Friendly Rules That Keep Dogs Safe
These are the key lessons I teach families during consultations and puppy classes. They are simple, practical, and make a huge difference to safety and harmony at home.
- Avoid cuddling. Many dogs find restraint uncomfortable, especially puppies.
- No carrying dogs around. Dogs have legs, and using them builds confidence.
- Do not get in a dog’s face. This can feel threatening or overwhelming.
- Avoid running around dogs. This increases arousal and accidental nipping.
- No screaming. To puppies, this can sound like a squeaky toy.
- Never disturb a sleeping dog. Tired dogs have lower tolerance.
- Separate play areas. Dogs cannot tell the difference between children’s toys and dog toys.
The most important rule of all is that dogs and young children should never be left unsupervised. Even gentle puppies can nip if startled, squeezed, or over handled. Supervision protects both the child and the dog.

What to Do If Your Dog Growls
A growl is not behaviour to punish. It is valuable information. Your dog is telling you they are uncomfortable or overwhelmed. If you punish the growl, the dog learns not to warn.

If you only buy one book as a parent, make it Doggie Language. It helps children recognise the subtle ways dogs communicate their feelings.
Children & Dogs FAQs
Why do puppies dislike cuddles?
Puppies do not naturally enjoy restraint. It can feel overwhelming. Some learn to tolerate cuddles, but it should always be their choice.
Is growling at a child bad behaviour?
No. Growling is communication. Respecting it prevents escalation. Punishing it removes the warning.
What age should children learn dog safe behaviour?
As early as possible. Even toddlers can learn simple safety rules.
Can toys cause problems between children and dogs?
Yes. Dogs cannot reliably tell the difference between children’s toys and dog toys. Separate play areas reduce conflict.
