Top 3 Tips Before You Bring Pup Home

Crate

The crate should be situated within easy walking distance to the spending area.  It should be big enough for your pup to stand, stretch & turn around, with a Non-Spill water bowl one end and VetBed at the other end.  Cover half the crate with a blanket to create a dark area.  You may wish to use a heat pad under the bed before night time, leave a radio on nearby and /or a ticking clock.

Chewing

Pups do not need access to the whole house for the first week, so restrict access to a few puppy proof rooms to begin with.  Ensure all cables, shoes and other puppy favourites are not in reach.  Stock up on some good quality chew toys ready for arrival.

Children/Play

Puppies nip, which is an important part of their learning appropriate pressure.  Children should be taught not to react.  Stay calm & quiet, stand up, fold their arms and slowly walk away.  All play and interaction should be supervised and kept low key.  It is important to teach children never to take anything away from the puppy, stroke the pups head or pick the puppy up.  Check out our article on Children Interacting With Dogs.
