Polite Dog Greetings

Does your dog get over excited when greeting other dogs or people?

This is such a common issue for owners. In this video, I am training appropriate greetings. Rather than telling the dog off for pulling towards another dog/person, it’s about giving direction. Teaching the dog HOW you want them to greet.

STEP ONE: Maintain a loose lead on approach. This may take ten minutes. It may mean doing a few turns. Walking in straight lines is the enemy when teaching LLW.

STEP TWO: Ask the owner if it’s ok for the dogs to say hello (never assume). If agreed, cue ‘OKAY’ to tell your dog it’s ok to greet. Keep greetings short (no longer than three seconds). Avoid greeting every dog (rule of thumb is one in three).

STEP THREE: Cue ‘LET’S GO’ to encourage your dog greeting is over and to move away with you. Maintain a loose lead, avoid dragging away and reward when your dog makes their own decision to come with you. Make THIS the most rewarding step.

You can apply this exercise to people as well. For loose lead walking and lots of more, check out our Outstanding Obedience Online Course. Don’t forget, GOOD TREATS HELP, stock up on those Sprats and take a look at our shop for all the best yummy treats that will help!! : )

Let me know how you get on! x
