Dog Food

Dog food can be such a confusing market. So many trainers, breeders, vets and pet shops can have ulterior motives for recommending certain foods to owners.

.

I am not a nutritionist. I can just give you my own personal experience when looking at what food to provide your dog.

.

In this day and age, cost has a significant impact on what I feed Bear. Dog food, along with most things, has seen a dramatic increase in price. Whilst you should avoid frequently changing foods, I keep these on my Amazon Wishlist to monitor the price and when any of these are on offer, I buy that stuff up!

.

My general advice to owners, is a high protein, low carbohydrate, good quality dry food. It means I don’t have to worry about storage or preparation and I can easily use part of his diet to train with.

.

There are many good quality dry foods on the market, here are a few I use with Bear. Many of them can be used with puppies and dogs, otherwise they will have a puppy specific version.

.

AATU:

AATU is an 80/20 diet (80% protein, 20% fruit and veg). Based in Hertfordshire, it comes in a variety of flavours and has a puppy specific food. The salmon version contains natural oils to promote healthy glossy coats. The thing I like about AATU, is it has one protein source, making easier for the tummy to digest.

.

Eden:

Eden is another 80/20 diet. Due to it’s quality it is suitable for both puppies and dogs. It comes in small and medium sized kibble to suit small – large breeds and is made right here in the UK.

.

Akela:

Akela is another 80/20 diet, made in the UK. This is one of the original 80/20 diet’s, they do a puppy specific version and various kibble sizes to suit all breeds. It’s also very good value for money.

.

Orijen:

Orijen has 85% protein content. It has a puppy specific version with no grains or meat derivatives.

.

Canagan:

Canagan is 60% protein, but still a very good quality food. It comes in a variety of flavours and sizes and made in Britain.

.

Always ensure you weigh your dogs food out on Digital Scales. Avoid using cups as there will be slight variants. It will say on the back of each brand a guide to daily requirements.
