Bear’s Chew Test: Full Rabbit Pelt – Gross or Great?
Would you give your dog a full rabbit pelt? 🐇
That’s exactly what Bear tested this week — a fur-on rabbit pelt chew (don’t worry, no feet). And while it wasn’t the longest-lasting chew on the list, Bear absolutely loved every second of it.
Why We’re Testing Chews
We’re on a mission to find the best natural, long-lasting dog chews. Not just for fun (though, yes, Bear thinks it’s great), but to help dog owners like you make smart, safe, and worthwhile choices.
Benefits of Natural, Long-Lasting Dog Chews
- Reduces arousal & promotes calm – Chewing releases feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin, helping dogs self-regulate.
- Provides a safe outlet for natural behaviour – Satisfies that innate need to chew without sacrificing your furniture.
- Boosts mental enrichment – Keeps dogs occupied, thinking, and less likely to engage in destructive boredom behaviours.
- Supports dental and gut health – Helps clean teeth and may aid digestion, especially with fur-on chews like rabbit pelt.
- Novel protein for sensitive dogs – Rabbit is often used in hypoallergenic diets, making it ideal for pups with allergies.
Fur-On Chews: What’s the Deal?
Fur-on chews like rabbit pelt are often said to act as a natural fibre — helping sweep the digestive tract and even assisting with parasite management (though this isn’t scientifically proven).
They’re also excellent for novelty and enrichment, offering different textures and experiences to keep your dog engaged.
Bear’s Chew-Time League Table
Here’s where rabbit pelt landed on the chew-time leaderboard:
- 🦢 Ostrich Foot — 1h 16m
- 🦌 Deer Leg — 59m
- 🐄 Yak Bar — 29m (Bear lost interest)
- 🐄 Pizzle Stick — 23m 38s
- 🐶 Plutos Bone — 16m 45s
- 🦬 Buffalo Skin — 7m 50s
- 🐄 Beef Tail — 5m 50s
- 🐇 Rabbit Pelt — 5m 12s
- 🐖 Pig’s Ear — 4m 10s
Should You Try It?
While it’s not the longest-lasting chew, the rabbit pelt was a hit in terms of flavour and novelty. As always, supervise closely and introduce new chews gradually — especially fur-on ones. Not all dogs tolerate fur well, and too much could lead to digestive upset.
But if your dog enjoys variety and you’re after something novel, rabbit pelt could be a fun (and furry) addition to your enrichment routine.
