Best Way to Wash a Dirty Dog

Looking for the best way to wash a dirty dog after muddy walks, fox poo rolls, puppy accidents or smelly adventures? Over the years, I’ve developed a simple routine that gets Bear clean, soft and smelling far more socially acceptable.

If your dog treats mud, puddles, fox poo and mysterious countryside smells like luxury perfume, you are not alone. Some dogs seem to find the one disgusting thing in a field with the accuracy of a heat-seeking missile.

The good news is that washing a dirty dog does not need to become a stressful wrestling match in the bathroom. With the right routine, the right products and a little bit of calm preparation, you can get your dog clean, comfortable and smelling much less like regret.

Here is the simple washing routine I use with Bear, my Labrador, after muddy walks, smelly rolls and the occasional “what on earth have you found?” moment.

Do Puppies Need Baths?

Puppies can get filthy very quickly. They step in things, lie in things, dribble food down themselves and, during toilet training, sometimes manage to wee on themselves too. Glamorous, isn’t it?

My general rule of thumb is this: I avoid bathing young puppies unless they really need it. If your puppy has rolled in fox poo, had diarrhoea on their coat, or got something genuinely unpleasant on them, then yes, a proper wash may be needed.

But for muddy paws, a little wee on the coat, food around the face or general puppy mess, a damp cloth or Bugalugs Dog Wipes will often do the job perfectly well.

The goal is not to have a perfectly spotless puppy every second of the day. The goal is to keep them comfortable, clean enough and confident with gentle handling. If every tiny bit of dirt turns into a full bath, some puppies can quickly decide that being picked up, wiped, washed or dried is something to avoid.

So, keep puppy cleaning short, calm and practical. Wipe what needs wiping, reward them for staying relaxed, and save full bath time for the moments when it is genuinely needed.

Make Bath Time Easier Before You Start

For many dogs, the hardest part of bath time is not the shampoo. It is standing still, being handled, hearing the water, and wondering why their carefully chosen fox poo perfume is being removed.

This is where licking enrichment can be really helpful. A LickiMat Splash can stick to tiles, a bath or a shower screen, while a LickiMat UFO is another useful suction-based option for grooming, bathing and handling sessions.

Add a small amount of dog-safe peanut butter, Arden Grange Liver Paste or Natures Deli Paste, and your dog has something positive to focus on while you do the practical bit.

This is not about distracting your dog so you can force them through something scary. It is about making the whole experience feel calmer, more predictable and more rewarding.

You can read more about why this helps in Why Licking Calms Dogs. If your dog struggles with brushing, handling or grooming in general, you may also find Using a LickiMat UFO for Grooming helpful.

Step 1: Start With Warm Water

Start by soaking your dog’s coat thoroughly with lukewarm water. This helps loosen mud, dirt and anything suspicious they have proudly applied to themselves during a walk.

Avoid blasting water straight into your dog’s face, ears or eyes. Keep the process calm and predictable, especially if your dog is unsure about being washed.

If your dog finds washing stressful, slow everything down. Short, calm sessions with plenty of reinforcement are much better than forcing them through it and creating a negative association with bath time. Forcing a worried dog through washing, grooming or handling can quickly become overwhelming, which is why confidence-building matters. You may also find What Is Flooding in Dog Training? useful.

Step 2: Use a Good Dog Shampoo

Once your dog’s coat is wet, apply a good-quality dog shampoo. I use Groom Professional Shampoo because it lasts ages, smells lovely and works really well on muddy, smelly coats.

This is especially useful if your dog has rolled in fox poo, pond sludge or one of those mystery smells that makes you question every life choice that led to dog ownership.

Shop tip: If your dog regularly comes home smelling like they have made poor life choices in a hedge, keeping a bottle of Groom Professional Shampoo ready at home is a very sensible investment.

Step 3: Work the Shampoo Into the Coat

Once the shampoo is on, add a little more water and work it into the coat properly. For Bear, I use the KONG Zoom Groom.

The soft rubber bristles help the shampoo reach deeper into the coat, loosen dirt and lift dead hair. It also gives many dogs a lovely massage-style scrub, which can make the whole washing process feel less like a chore and more like a spa day.

The KONG Zoom Groom is particularly useful for Labradors and other short-coated dogs that still manage to hold onto mud, loose hair and countryside perfume.

Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly

Once you have a good layer of foam, rinse your dog thoroughly. This bit matters. Leftover shampoo can irritate the skin, especially if your dog has a sensitive coat or is prone to itchiness.

Keep rinsing until the water runs clear and you cannot feel any shampoo residue in the coat.

If your dog wriggles, worries or would rather be anywhere else, this is where a LickiMat Splash can be really useful. Stick it to the bath, shower screen or tiles, add a small amount of dog-safe peanut butter, Arden Grange Liver Paste or Natures Deli Paste, and let your dog lick while you rinse.

Licking can help many dogs settle, and it gives them something positive to focus on while you get the practical job done. You can read more about this in Why Licking Calms Dogs.

Step 5: Dry Your Dog Properly

Drying is just as important as washing. If your dog stays damp for too long, they can quickly develop that classic wet dog smell, especially in thick coats.

I use a microfibre towel first to absorb as much water as possible, then Bear wears his drying coat while he settles on his bed with something nice to chew.

A drying coat is especially useful after wet walks, muddy adventures, swimming, bath time or the dreaded fox poo incident.

A good microfibre towel can also make a big difference because it removes water much more effectively than a standard household towel. Less water in the coat means less dripping, less shaking, and fewer wet dog paw prints decorating the house.

Why Does My Dog Shed So Much After A Bath?

If your dog seems to shed half their coat after a bath, you are not imagining it.

Once Bear has been washed, towel dried and is wearing his drying coat, I often notice a lot of loose hair starts coming away. The water, shampooing and drying process can loosen dead coat that was already ready to fall out.

Rather than finding it all over the house, I use that opportunity to give him a good brush once he is clean and dry. For Bear, the FURminator Deshedding Tool is really useful for removing loose undercoat, while the KONG Zoom Groom and Dual Grooming Brush are useful for gentler, everyday coat care.

Just remember to use the right brush for your dog’s coat type, keep the pressure gentle, and avoid turning grooming into a marathon. Short, positive brushing sessions are far better than trying to remove every single loose hair in one go.

If your dog seems to produce enough hair after a bath to build a second dog, you may find The Best Deshedding Tool helpful. For a broader routine, you can also read Dog Grooming Routine Tips.

Healthy Skin Helps Create A Healthy Coat

Bathing is only one part of coat care. Your dog’s skin and coat health are also influenced by nutrition, grooming, genetics, overall health and any underlying skin issues.

I also like using Bugalugs Scottish Salmon Oil with Bear to support skin and coat condition. Salmon oil is rich in omega fatty acids, which can be helpful as part of a wider approach to supporting healthy skin, a glossy coat and general wellbeing.

It is not a magic cure for shedding, and if your dog has sore, itchy, flaky or irritated skin, it is always worth speaking to your vet. But for everyday coat support, a good salmon oil can be a useful addition alongside a suitable diet, sensible bathing and regular grooming.

Check Nails, Paws and Collar Fit While You’re There

Once your dog has been washed, dried and brushed, it is a good time to have a quick look at their nails, paws and collar too.

This does not mean turning bath time into a full grooming appointment. But if your dog is calm and settled, a quick paw check can help you spot overgrown nails, cracked pads, sore areas or anything caught between the toes.

For nail care, a nail grinder can be a useful alternative to clippers, especially for dogs who worry about sudden snips. A scratch board for nails can also be a brilliant low-stress option, particularly for puppies or dogs who prefer to take a more active role in their own nail care.

In colder weather, or after lots of wet, muddy walks, paw balm can also help support dry or cracked pads. Think of it as a little finishing touch after the wash, dry and brush routine. Very fancy. Your dog may or may not appreciate the spa experience.

Bath time can also be a useful reminder to check your dog’s collar fit and ID tag while everything is off. Before the collar goes back on, make sure it still fits comfortably and safely. If you are unsure, have a look at How to Fit a Dog Collar Correctly.

For Quick Cleans After Walks

Not every muddy walk needs a full bath. Sometimes you just need to rinse paws, legs and undercarriage before your dog redecorates the kitchen floor.

For this, a Mud Daddy is brilliant. Keep it in the car or by the door and use it for quick rinses after muddy walks, beach trips or woodland adventures.

It is one of those bits of kit you do not think you need until your dog gets into the car looking like they have been dipped in gravy.

If your dog only has muddy paws, a dirty tummy or a bit of mess after a walk, a quick rinse with the Mud Daddy, followed by a microfibre towel or drying coat, is often much easier than a full bathroom operation.

If your dog loves outdoor adventures, it is also worth thinking about how walks are structured. Calm, sniffy walks, decompression time and sensible management can all help dogs enjoy the world without every outing turning into a full laundry incident. You may find Loose Lead Walking Starts Here and Keeping Engagement Off Lead helpful too.

Keep Bath Time Calm and Positive

The best way to wash a dirty dog is not just about the products.

It is also about the emotional experience.

If your dog is worried about water, the bath, the hose or being handled, do not force them through it. Build confidence gradually, use food, keep sessions short and reward calm behaviour. The RSPCA also recommends patience and reward-based methods when helping dogs become comfortable with grooming experiences.

For dogs who struggle with handling, it can help to teach cooperative care skills like a chin rest, and to avoid overwhelming them during grooming or washing.

Having the right kit ready makes the whole process quicker, calmer and much less chaotic. Your dog gets clean, your house survives, and everyone can pretend the fox poo incident never happened.

FAQ

What is the best way to wash a dirty dog?

The best way to wash a dirty dog is to wet the coat thoroughly with lukewarm water, apply a good dog shampoo, work it into the coat with a soft brush like a KONG Zoom Groom, rinse thoroughly, then dry your dog properly with microfibre towels or a drying coat.

How do I get fox poo smell off my dog?

Use lukewarm water, a good-quality dog shampoo and work the shampoo deep into the coat before rinsing thoroughly. A soft rubber grooming brush can help lift the smell from the coat. You may need to repeat the wash if the smell is particularly strong.

Can I use human shampoo on my dog?

It is best to use a shampoo made for dogs. Human shampoos are not designed for a dog’s skin and coat, and may cause irritation, especially if used regularly.

How often should I wash my dog?

It depends on your dog’s coat, lifestyle and skin health. Dogs who roll in mud, swim or find smelly things may need washing more often than dogs who stay relatively clean. If your dog has skin problems, speak to your vet for advice.

How can I keep my dog calm during bath time?

Use short, calm sessions, avoid forcing your dog, and pair washing with positive experiences. A LickiMat Splash with dog-safe peanut butter, liver paste or another dog-safe spread can give your dog something soothing to focus on while you rinse them.

Should I bathe my puppy if they get dirty?

Only bathe a young puppy if they really need it, such as after rolling in something disgusting or getting faeces on their coat. For muddy paws, food around the face or small toilet-training accidents, a damp cloth or dog-safe wipe is often enough.

Why does my dog shed so much after a bath?

Bathing, towel drying and the coat drying process can loosen dead hair that was already ready to come out. Once your dog is clean and dry, a gentle brushing session can help remove loose coat before it ends up around your home.
